Benefits of Modern Sinus Procedures
Enough is enough….this is the attitude of many patients as they choose surgery to ease the misery that can accompany sinus sufferers. The pain, tenderness, nasal congestion and headaches complimenting sinus disorders can negatively impact your quality of life and when medications or other home therapies are not enough, surgery is an option.
The majority of modern sinus procedures are performed through nasal endoscopes. There are many benefits to using an endoscope for sinus surgery as opposed to more traditional methods. It is less painful, leads to less bleeding and post procedure discomfort, leaves no visible scarring, has a faster recovery period, and a higher success rate. Endoscopic sinus surgery, utilizes an endoscope to magnify the sinus tissues and specialized instruments are then used to remove causes of the sinus blockage. It is performed under general anesthesia in the office.
Balloon Sinuplasty is another surgical procedure option which is done in the operating room as an outpatient procedure. During this procedure a balloon catheter is inserted into the sinuses and then inflated so that saline can be sprayed to flush out any pus or mucus. This technique is very much similar to the way heart surgeons open up blocked arteries with balloon angioplasty. The benefits of balloon sinuplasty are much the same as those of endoscopic procedures.
