For many people, ears do the remarkable job of allowing one to hear a huge range of sounds, from a whisper to a loud band. To do this the ear transforms sound energy into electrical signals which the brain can interpret. Ears also help to maintain your balance.

However, approximately 28 million Americans have a hearing impairment and hearing loss affects approximately 17 in 1,000 children under age 18. Hearing loss can be a gradual process, often taking years before an individual notices difficulty hearing. Approximately 30 percent of people over age 65 have hearing loss and approximately 45 percent of people over age 75 have a hearing loss.
